Tunnel excavation or mining require specific air treatment to maintain pollutant levels within the limits of the law.

The dense presence of dust in these sites can seriously harm the health of workers, pollute the environment and compromise the proper functioning of the machinery used.

The issue of air treatment in tunnels and mines during the excavation phases is regulated by specific laws issued by each country. These set out responsibilities, means and limits to be complied with to safeguard workers' health, the environment and equipment.

For example, the main applicable regulations in Italy are the Consolidated Law on Safety at Work 81/2008, the Consolidated Law on the Environment 152/2006, the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, and the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU.

In order to address the air quality issues in underground construction sites, specific ventilation systems are required to meet the requirements of the law.
A tunnel or mine ventilation system during the excavation phases is an articulated system composed of different parts: fans, distribution ducts, dedusting systems, and regulation and measurement systems.
 
At Montes, we are specialists in the design and production of dedusting systems made to customer specifications for any type of pollutant, including in explosive environments (ATEX M2 certification) and for conventional (roadheaders, hydraulic hammers, explosives) or mechanized (TBM) excavation techniques.

Conventional excavation dedusters are air filtration systems capable of operating autonomously in support of primary ventilation systems. This solution ensures maximum flexibility and the proper treatment of all types of dust. Conventional excavation filtration systems are mobile and can be placed in strategic points at the site for effective dust collection straight from the source.
 
Mechanized excavation dedusters are installed on TBMs to dedust the air drawn in by the rotating head and related equipment. They are custom-designed to fit perfectly into the backup section on the TBM and connected to the air intake and discharge piping.
 
The solutions available to treat any type of dust (silica, gypsum, limestone, asbestos, coal, etc.) in tunnel excavation and mining are:

 

  • TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) dedusters to be mounted on the backup
  • Dedusters for conventional excavation methods (roadheaders, hydraulic hammers, explosives)
